Happy MOTHERFU- sorry, got a little excited there. Happy Friday, friends. I’ve got something new here for you today.
My good friend Cody asked if I’d be down to compare the new wings of Domino’s against the new hot honey chicken from Popeyes. Of course I’m down for that. Eating Domino’s and eating Popeyes are two things I love to do. So thank you, Cody.
Like an idiot, I keep forgetting to snap photos of these to embed in the review and use as my main art, so the video will have to suffice. I’ll get better, I promise.
These were two pretty nice food items. I’ll start with Popeyes. Popeyes has my favorite bone-in chicken (let the record show I haven’t been to a sit-down restaurant that specializes in high-end fried chicken), so it entered the comparison with an advantage.
This hot honey chicken was quite good. I picked up the Popeyes prior to the Domino’s, so the hot honey chicken had been sitting longer, but the texture was still superior. The skin was crispy and the sauce wasn’t too sweet or too spicy, though a touch more spice would’ve been preferable for me.
It’s a talking point for me in the video, but pizza chain wings, like Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Little Caesars, etc., are generally not good. They’re like those frozen, pre-sauced wings you find in the grocery store. There’s no texture and they’re just mass-produced, rubbery-skinned chicken wings.
Dominos took a left turn, though, about a month ago and reinvented their wings. I had their previous wings only a couple times and they fell under the above category. Forgettable. Rubbery. Not great.
The new wings are most definitely a step in the right direction. There’s some actual texture and crisp, and the wings seemed to be better quality. They’re not at the level of a Wingstop or Buffalo Wild Wings, but it’s progress. The sauce I opted for, sweet habanero, was a bit sweet for my taste, but the habanero flavor wasn’t bad. I would’ve wanted a bit more spice and less sweetness.
Though the wings took up more space in this review, the Popeyes chicken takes the cake here. I scored the hot honey chicken a 7.6 and the wings a 6.1. Popeyes is just an elite fast food establishment. I do prefer the standard, non-sauced chicken, but the hot honey chicken is nice.
Thanks for reading/watching. Take care. Stay safe. Be a good person. Goodbye.
