KFC is not the best fast-food restaurant. It’s not even the best fast-food chicken restaurant. Popeyes and Chick-fil-A are another tier up, for fast-food chicken places in Fargo-Moorhead.
That being said, the Colonel’s new chicken and donuts sandwich is a brilliant invention. It’s a far crazier item than anything offered at competing chicken chains. I wouldn’t recommend eating more than one or two a year to preserve health, but, man, it is one hell of a treat.
Basically, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a piece of breaded, boneless KFC chicken with two donuts as the bun. It’s ridiculous, it’s obscene, but it’s really tasty. The sweetness of the donut glaze and saltiness of the fried chicken just works together. It’s like a chicken and waffles dish on steroids. Granted, chicken and waffles dishes that are better than this sandwich are available, but donuts and fried chicken is a level up on the ridiculousness scale.
The donut was better than I thought it would be, too. It was fluffy and pretty fair quality. My critique would be the glaze was too melty and not set. By the time I ate this, like five minutes after getting it, much of the glaze was melted into a pool at the bottom of the container. Nonetheless, there was still enough on the sandwich and it was delicious.
Part of me is curious about having a sauce on the sandwich, but I think it’s perfectly fine without the sauce. It would also be tricky to decide on what flavor would enhance it. The only thing I can think of is a sriracha aioli or something similar and spicy. Just a plain mayo, or ranch or ketchup would destroy it.
The one thing that could maybe take this beast up another level is bacon. I don’t even want to imagine the nutrition facts on that. This one is already 1,100 calories and 100% the recommended daily intake of fat. Woof.
I’m unsure how to rate this. In terms of overall fast-food flavor, I’ve gotta give it an 8.3. It’s horribly unhealthy, it’s sweet, salty and crazy; but it’s a good crazy. If you’re curious, it’s something you’ve gotta try just once before it’s gone.
Thanks for reading. One more blog coming Friday or Saturday this week.
Chicken. Donuts. 8.3.
