Well, Fargo is getting absolutely pounded by a snowstorm right now. So that’s fun. It’s April 11. I’m fine. THIS IS FINE.
You might have noticed an asterisk in the title of this post. That was intentional. I’ll get to that shortly. For my the latest Basket Review, I hit Broadway bar Twist, located in the heart of downtown Fargo.
Twist does not have a traditional chicken strip basket, but it does have a chicken strips and waffles dish, and I was able to order some fries on the side. I’m not really sure how to score this, but I’ll try. It’s the least I can do for you wonderful, deserving people.
The chicken strips themselves were decent. They could have been a bit more crispy and used an extra pinch of salt, but they were fine.
I could eat a mountain of Twist’s fries. They were the ideal texture and crispiness, and were adequately salty.
Each individual chicken strip was resting atop a section of a delicious golden brown waffle, and drizzled in sweet pepper mayo and maple syrup. On paper, sweet pepper mayo and maple syrup coming together in one dish might not make sense, but it’s 2019 and the sauces were able to coexist without issue.
And the side of ranch we got with the fries was pretty standard restaurant ranch. It was pleasant.
So here’s where things get tricky. Obviously, this wasn’t exactly a chicken strip basket; however, there were chicken strips, there were fries and there were sauces.
I’m going rogue, people, and you’re about to witness history. This will be a first. I’m going to give two separate scores.
I tried each element of the meal separately before consuming everything as one delectable, cohesive dish, as it was meant to be.
Scoring this as a “basket,” I’ll go with a 7.1. The chicken strips weren’t bad and the fries were pretty decent. All the sauce was solid.
As a cohesive dish, I’ll give the chicken and waffles a 7.6. The chicken was decent and the waffle was quite good. The sweet pepper mayo worked surprisingly well with everything and the maple syrup gave it a little extra sweetness without being over the top.
I plan on returning to Twist. They had some enticing drink specials and the rest of the food menu sounds excellent. Plus, it had a fun, laid-back ambiance that would be a great starting point for a night on the town.
Shoutout to Emma for joining me, and you’re welcome for introducing you to chicken and waffles. 7.1/7.6.
